Two foreigners from Hongkong and Malaysia, who were busted for carrying out a million-drug deal in Binondo, Manila in 2012, were handed out life sentenences Friday for violating section 5 article II of RA 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
Sui Ming Tat, of Hongkong and Lee Yoong Hoew, of Malaysia were found guilty beyond reasonable doubt for peddling illegal drugs by the Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 13.
In a nine-page decision written by Judge Emilio Rodolfo Legaspi III, Sui and Lee were ordered transferred to the national penitentiary to serve their sentence.
They were likewise fined P500, 000 each.
Court records showed that Sui and Lee were arrested during a buy bust operation by the operatives of Philippine National Police-Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operations Task Force inside a hotel in Binondo, Manila at 9 a.m. of July 26, 2012.
Police said 426.30 grams of Ephedrine, listed as illegal drugs in the country, worth P1.3 million were seized from the two foreign nationals during the operation.
During a pre-trial conference on November 6, 2012, Sui and Lee, who earlier pleaded not guilty, said they arrived in the Philippines on July 24, 2012 for a tour.
After staying in the country for two days, however, Lee claimed that his mother rang him up and asked him to return to Malaysia.
Lee added that after purchasing a plane ticket, he returned to his hotel room and saw Sui already handcuffed and surrounded by the police.
He was also handcuffed and placed under arrest.
Sui and Lee insisted that a plastic bag containing illegal drugs found in their possession was planted, debunking the police’s statement that a buy-bust operatiion was carried out.
