President Rodrigo Duterte graced the third year commemoration of the onslaught of Super Typhoon Yolanda Tuesday, November 8, at the mass grave site in Barangay Basper in Tacloban City.
The chief executive stayed only for few hours with the survivors of the super typhoon who also visited the mass grave site; he offered flowers and candles and prayed for their beloved victims.
In his speech during the visit, Duterte expressed his dismay over the slow rehabilitation or rebuilding of the damaged areas in the Yolanda corridor, particularly the relocation of the affected victims.
He vowed to look into the flight of the typhoon survivors and urged that they be moved to relocation sites within the year.
VP ice breaker
Breaking the somber mood of the ceremonies, the president shared some light moments with Vice President Leni Robredo, from asking her about her boyfriend to admitting being smitten with the beautiful vice president.
“Pupunta rin ako dito kasi nandito si Vice President eh. Kung siya, saan siya nagapunta, nagpasunod-sunod ako,” the president said in jest.
“Pero biyuda kasi, annulled man ako sa, ‘yan ang totoo, annulled ako sa asawa ko. Pero may anak ako, basta masuportahan lang, okay lang ‘yun,” he added, drawing laughter from the crowd.
The president then talked about rumors that Robredo’s boyfriend was supposedly a congressman.
“Ma’am balita ko may boyfriend ka na? Sabi nila,” Duterte said, turning his head to face Robredo who was also onstage. “Do not be offended pero ‘yung sabi nila hindi ‘yun totoo? Kay kung totoo ‘yun ma’am, eh magpatay na congressman na ba ako para ma-biyuda uli,” he quipped.
