About 300 government offices, private companies and even international organizations on Tuesday fell victims to a bomb threat which turned out to be a hoax.
A message saying a bomb is set to explode was sent by e-mail by a certain Alexander Unger, with email address alexander.unger1111@gmail.com.
“Sa second floor ng office niyo sa may steel cabinet, may 4 na envelope-sized bombs na nakatago. Kahapon namin nilagay at sasabog yan ngayon (November 8),” the mail, whose copy was obtained by the Manila Bulletin, read.
In Quezon City, six offices of the Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) were alerted of the bomb scare which were later cleared by the Quezon City Police District’s Explosive Ordnance Division (QCPD-EOD).
Chief Inspector Noel Sublay, head of the QCPD-EOD, said while the offices reported the threats at different times, the electronic message was sent at around 12:27 p.m.
Operations were disrupted in DENR Main Office along Visayas Avenue, DENR-National Capital Region office on East Avenue; the DA Main Office, and the DA Training Center on Elliptical Road. Employees of the DILG stayed inside the compound as authorities made their rounds.
The same threat was also sent to other government agencies such as Department of Tourism, Budget and Management, Social Welfare and Development, Transportation, and Energy, among others, and their regional offices.
Sublay said at least two hotels in Manila were also hit by the bomb threat.
International organizations Association of South East Asian Nations, UNICEF, and even the United Nations received the message as well.
The message was also sent to a number of personal e-mail accounts in other countries such as Malaysia, Vietnam, Armenia, Swaziland, and Zambia.
Sublay guessed that the sender may have acquired the e-mail addresses in public websites.
The Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group will be tapped to trace the perpetrators of the said hoax.
