Kerwin Espinosa, the alleged top drug lord of Eastern Visayas and son of slain Albuera Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr., is expected to be extradited to the Philippines on Thursday, November 17, after his arrest in Abu Dhabi last month.
Director General Ronald dela Rosa, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, assured Kerwin’s safety the moment his custody is turned over to the Philippine government.
“Barring all hitches, maybe they will be here on Thursday,” said dela Rosa. “We will not bring him to the issuing court in Leyte, he will be detained in Camp Crame and we will be asking the court for it.”
A team of PNP officers led by Senior Supt. Albert Ignatius Ferro, according to dela Rosa, already left the country to fetch Espinosa.
Authorities took three months to track down Espinosa abroad until he was tipped by some Filipino workers in Abu Dhabi who spotted him scouting for travel agencies in a desperate bid to extend his stay in the United Arab Emirates.
Kerwin faces a string of criminal charges, including cases related to drugs and unlicensed guns.
The issue of Kerwin’s safety surfaced after his father was shot dead during the serving of a search warrant inside the Leyte Sub-Provincial Jail in Baybay City by local police.
Senators said the death of Espinosa reeks of extra-judicial killing due to the manner the search warrant was served, including the police’s call for assistance by scene of the crime operations several minutes before the actual operation.
President Duterte himself assured Kerwin’s safety, explaining that he is interested to see the latter’s list of drug personalities.
