Duterte Cancels Townhall Meet, Interview with Kris Aquino

President Rodrigo Duterte has cancelled his appearance on Friday, November 11, at the townhall interview with Kris Aquino during the National MSME Summit 2016, which is participated by micro, small and medium enterprises.

Trade and industry secretary Ramon Lopez made the announcement, apologizing to the 700 guests who waited hours for the townhall discussion, which is supposed to be the culmination of the two-day event.

He said Duterte was not feeling well after arriving from his state visits in Thailand and Malaysia.

Shortly after the announcement, presidential adviser on entrepreneurship Joey Concepcion, who is also founder of Go Negosyo, came up on stage and said the president suffers from severe migraine.

Duterte, along with his senior officials, arrived at F. Bangoy International Airport in Davao City at past 4:00 a.m. He delivered a speech for about 30 minutes and answered the media’s questions.

The townhall discussion pushed through without Duterte, with TV host Kris Aquino as moderator.

“Minsan first date hindi natutuloy. Mr. President, pinaghandaan kita, nag-diet ako ng dalawang linggo,” the TV host joked. She also jested that she would sometimes cause migraine to her interviewees.

Aquino said, “Mr. President, I hope one day mahalin mo rin ako.”

The townhall interview has been highly anticipated, with the event to be televised live on government-run PTV 4 and commercial station TV5. This also marks Aquino’s return to television after a seven-month hiatus.

The first townhall discussion was held during the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)’s Mentor Me program on November 7.

Within four months after assuming power, Duterte had traveled to Laos, Indonesia, Vietnam, Brunei, China, Japan, Thailand and Malaysia in a bid to strengthen foreign relations and possibly attract businessmen to invest in the country.
