Metro Manila’s top cop yesterday warned celebrities that showing off
“self-serving” drug test results would not necessarily clear them if
they are included in the Philippine National Police (PNP)’s drug
watchlist.
At a press briefing at Camp Karingal, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Director Chief Supt. Oscar Albayalde said the process should be credible to ensure that drug tests were not done to serve the interest of the celebrities.
He made the statement after a horde of celebrities publicized their negative drug test results, including 40 Star Magic talents and personalities from other networks.
Currently, there are around 54 to 57 “narco-celebrities” in the list being held by the NCRPO chief.
He said drug tests should be done by a clinic accredited by the Department of Health and under the supervision of police personnel.
An on-the-spot drug testing is being proposed by Albayalde, which is now the norm for government agencies, including the PNP and the Civil Service Commission.
Albayalde added that the adjudication process in the clearing of one’s name from the drug watchlist could take months.
The process includes drug testing, background investigation and several validations by police intelligence operatives.
The validation process is now being done every month, unlike before when it was a quarterly procedure, according to Albayalde.
He urged celebrities to surrender and assured them that their right to privacy would be protected.
He, however, warned that there would be no sacred cows if they continue with their illegal activities.
Albayalde said they received information that most of the celebrities in the drug watchlist were just users who shared the drugs with their friends.
