PNP director general Ronald dela Rosa said he respects the Office of the Ombudsman’s decision to probe him over the propriety of his all-expenses-paid trip to Las Vegas, Nevada to watch the Pacquiao–Vargas fight.
“Ituloy po ninyo ang inyong imbestigasyon. I respect your office and your decision,” the PNP chief told radio DZMM Friday, November 11. “Hindi po ako nagtatampo sa inyo.”
The PNP chief also apologized to those who questioned his attendance in the boxing match between Senator Manny Pacquiao and Jessie Vargas at the Thomas & Mack Center on November 5, U.S. time.
He insisted that he and Pacquiao are longtime friends and that he had watched some of Pacquiao’s past bouts live in Las Vegas.
The PNP chief had earlier admitted spending nothing for the trip, where he was seen on television screen holding the Philippine flag in the ring beside the senator. He said he was on official leave during that time and spent no public funds.
Mary Rawnsle Lopez, head of the Ombudsman’s public information and media relations bureau, said the military and other law enforcement office (MOLEO) “is conducting fact-finding investigation regarding the alleged perks received by the PNP chief.”
Many boxing aficionados said the Ombudsman investigation should not only cover the PNP chief but other government officials who joined Pacquiao’s entourage.
It is a common knowledge that a number of lawmakers was accompanying the Filipino boxing champion whenever he went abroad to defend his many ring titles.
