Seven persons were nabbed by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) for illegal recruitment and estafa in separate entrapment operations in Manila and Makati Wednesday, November 16.
This came after a total of 26 persons filed complaints of illegal recruitment and estafa to the NBI against the suspects.
Operatives of the NBI anti-organized and transnational crime division (AOTCD) arrested five persons from a recruitment agency in Escolta Street in Binondo, Manila.
Annaliza Zoleta, Roldan Cordez, Aurora Quine, Christina Morales and Alma Lubiran—all from Primecha recruitment agency—were nabbed for recruiting nine seafarers for employment in foreign vessels without necessary licenses from the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration.
Lawyer Aristotle Adolfo, agent-in-charge, said Primecha had also charged the nine seafarers P80,000 each for their placement and processing fees.
In Makati, Phoebe Robedillo and daughter Joeline were arrested after 15 persons from Davao turned up to complain about them before the NBI.
The Robedillos also reportedly required their recruits to pay P15,000 as processing fee for their employment to Japan. However, they were neither deployed abroad nor enrolled to learn Niponggo as a part of their requirements.
NBI said the arrested suspects will be brought to the Department of Justice for inquest proceedings for illegal recruitment and estafa.
NBI spokesman Ferdinand Lavin called for the public to always check with the POEA if an agency is authorized or licensed to recruit persons for employment abroad.
