Syndicate Behind Death of Lanao del Sur Town Police Chief

LANAO DEL SUR — Relatives of the slain police chief of Poona Bayabao town in Lanao del Sur said they are convinced a drug syndicate whose ire the latter caught could be responsible for the ambush that resulted in his death.

Slain police chief Inspector Darangina Ditucalan had arrested more than a dozen high-profile drug offenders before gunmen killed him in Marawi City Monday night.

Ditucalan was killed in a gun attack in Marawi City, the capital of Lanao del Sur, not somewhere in Poona Bayabao as initially relayed by local officials to different media outfits in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

Lanao del Sur, a component province of ARMM, accounts for the most number of bloody clan wars involving Maranaw families.


Army intelligence sources said among those Ditucalan had detained for prosecution is a member of the Maute terror group in Lanao del Sur, which is operating in the fashion of the Independent State of Iraq and Syria.

Senior members of the Poona Bayabao municipal peace and order council said there are indications the murder of Ditucalan could be work-related and not an offshoot of a deep-seated clan war involving his family and a rival group.

The former mayor of Poona Bayabao, physician Lampa Pandi, said he and local community elders are certain Ditucalan got killed for his extensive enforcement of the government’s anti-narcotics campaign in barangays under his jurisdiction.    


Ditucalan was driving on his way home to Marawi City from Poona Bayabao when gunmen on motorcycles trailing behind opened fire with pistols as they got close, killing him on the spot.

Personnel of the Marawi City police are still trying to establish the identities of the culprits.
