Former Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago Dies at Age 71

Former Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago, at the age of 71, succumbed to cancer on Thursday morning. This was confirmed by her husband Atty. Jun Santiago and her daughter in law Mechel Santiago.

According to Atty. Jun Santiago, the brave former senator from Iloilo "died peacefully in her sleep this morning."

The senator, known for being feisty and fearless, first announced on July 2, 2014 that she had been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.

In October 2015, over a year after her announcement, Santiago declared that she would seek the presidency for the third time after having supposedly "conquered" cancer.

Throughout the presidential campaign, Santiago repeatedly dismissed questions about her health and her capability to lead the country.

Though most of the sign shows that she was not in a good condition, Santiago made a firm promise, "I will never quit!"
