President Rodrigo R. Duterte expressed gratitude to Muslim Filipinos for supporting the peace process with rebel groups in Mindanao in his message for today's celebration of Eid'l Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice.
Eid'l Adha, a declared national holiday, is Islam's most important feast for commemorating the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ishmael.
The Feast of Sacrifice is marked by the slaughter of cattle or sheep, with part of the meat given to the poor. It ends the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.
"This occasion reminds us of the virtues that strengthen the very foundation of Islam, truly invigorates our common aspirations and rekindles the true significance of our faith," said President Duterte in his message.
"I deeply appreciate your support to this government and its program on the ongoing peace process, especially in our efforts to realize equitable and sustainable development in Mindanao."
According to the president, it is his dream "to see our people, regardless of beliefs, join hands in building a united country for our children and the next generation."
"Let this celebration stand as a reminder that real change requires the sacrifice of our personal interests in favor of the common good of our citizens. Together, we can achieve progress, prosperity and harmony for all," he added.
The Duterte administration has promised a wider autonomy to Muslim Filipinos in Mindanao through a shift to a federal form of government, in which the country will be divided into 12 federal states, including one for the Bangsamoro.
Duterte also has reached out to Nur Misuari, the fugitive founder of the rival Moro National Liberation Front, to join the peace process.
