The government has promised to hold accountable any official involved in the alleged attempt to extort P50 million from gaming tycoon Jack Lam.
Assistant communications secretary Marie Banaag said an investigation into the alleged extortion try is now underway.
“The DOJ (Department of Justice) secretary is now conducting a probe where he promised no stone would be left unturned and we would hold those found accountable,” Banaag said.
Reports said two immigration commissioners tried to extort money from Lam for the release of more than 1,000 Chinese nationals arrested during a raid in his alleged illegal online gambling facility in Clark, Pampanga last month.
President Rodrigo Duterte earlier hinted that he was willing to allow Lam to resume his business in the country but has imposed some conditions, including payment of right taxes and apology for bribery attempt.
The president earlier ordered the arrest of Lam for economic sabotage and bribery charges, but the gaming tycoon had already left the country. Lam’s online gambling operations were also shuttered due to lack of permits.
