President Duterte is confident Sen. Manny Pacquiao has what it takes
to win his welterweight title fight against World Boxing Organization
champion Jessie Vargas on Sunday in Las Vegas.
The President hopes and prays that Pacquiao will knock out his American foe in the first round because if the fight takes longer, Pacquiao’s stamina could be put to test.
“Dapat (it should be a) knockout, at sana mas madalian (and it should be quick). Kasi if it goes beyond the seventh, eighth [round] pagod na yan (he will be tired),” Duterte told reporters when he visited the tomb of his parents at Wireless Public Cemetery here Tuesday night.
The President admitted he is not a boxing expert but that he has been following the career of Pacquaio, even back in the days when he was just starting to fight.
Duterte said Pacquiao has what he called the miracle punch that consistently beat his opponents and led to at least eight world boxing titles.
He said it is not even the left hook the southpaw boxer has been known for.
“It is more of a study when he fights. It is more of a God-given gift,” he said.
