As the Senate probed the operation that led to the killing of Albuera, Leyte mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr., a police officer involved in the operation bared the names of several officials tagged as part of the so-called Espinosa drug group in Leyte.
Actor and Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez and Leyte Rep. Vicente Veloso were among those named by Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) provincial officer Leo Laraga, who said Espinosa disclosed those names in a statement.
Gomez, responding to ABS-CBN News via text, dismissed the allegations as “ridiculous and outright laughable.”
“I will not even dignify that with an answer, huwag nila akong isama sa circus nila!,” Gomez said.
Also mentioned allegedly by Espinosa were Leyte Governor Leopoldo Dominico Petilla and Baybay City Vice Mayor Michael Cari.
The disclosure of the four personalities were made after Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III asked why the CIDG had to apply for a search warrant from Basey, Samar.
Laraga defended the move, saying the courts in Leyte that can issue search warrants are under the jurisdiction of the same politicians Espinosa implicated in his drug syndicate.
The circumstances surrounding Espinosa’s killing is being probed jointly by the committees on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs, and Justice and Human Rights.
