Chief presidential legal counsel Salvador Panelo sought to downplay massive protest actions against the burial of former president Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
Martial law victims and other anti-Marcos groups are set to stage a grand rally on Friday, November 25, at the Rizal Park and in other parts of the country to denounce the hasty burial of Marcos on November 8.
President Rodrigo Duterte was in Lima, Peru at that time to attend the 24th Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Meeting.
Panelo, in a statement on Monday, November 21, dismissed the protesters as a mere “vocal minority” exercising their constitutional right to peaceably assemble and air grievances.
“President (Rodrigo) Duterte is upholding such right. The clash of ideas is democracy in action,” he added.
The Coalition Against the Return of the Marcoses to Malacañang (Carmma) called on various groups protesting the Marcos hero’s burial to join their mass action on November 25.
“Let as rage against the revision of history and the reversal of the people’s judgement,” read a statement released by Carmma.
In a statement, Carmma called on holding into the account the president “for allowing the burial” as well as the Supreme Court “for insulting the victims of the dictatorship and for obfuscating the crimes of the dictator,” in reference to the 9-5-1 decision by the high court in favor of the burial.
Carmma also said “this peaceful rally invites Filipinos from all walks of life to come together in remembering and in protest. It is not a partisan activity serving vested political interests.”
