Fresh from his victory over his Mexican foe in Las Vegas (Nevada) last Sunday, Sen. Emmanuel D. Pacquiao donated yesterday his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight belt to the Senate of the Philippines.
“The honor does not belong to me alone, but to every Filipino, May it serve as inspiration for everyone to pursue excellence and continue fighting for our nation’s sovereignty,” Pacquiao said in a brief speech at the Senate session hall to Senate Resolution 217 authored by Senate Majority Leader Vicente C. Sotto III lauding his victory over his foe, Jesse Vargas.
The resolution of Sotto was co-authored by his colleagues in the 24-member Senate.
Pacquiao, with his injured scalp covered by his thick hair on the left side of his head incurred during his unanimous victory over Vargas, arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) yesterday morning. He attended the Senate session hall yesterday afternoon.
Addressing his colleagues in yesterday afternoon’s regular session presided over by Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III, Pacquiao thanked his colleagues for their “overflowing love and support” for him.
“My comeback boxing match where I was declared as the new WBO welterweight champion is dedicated to all boxing fans and to all pf you who believe in me,” he said
“Boxing is my passion. I come fully alive whenever I am in the ring. But I have a greater passion: serving our country. Just like you, Mr. President (Pimentel), my heartbeat is for our fellowmen. My fight with Jessie Vargas is a story ended, but the tougher battles outside the boxing ring are yet to be won,” he added.
