The Northern Police District (NPD) deployed yesterday over 1,000 police officers to cemeteries in the Camanava (Caloocan-Malabon-Navotas-Valenzuela) area to ensure a crime-free observance of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day.
NPD director Senior Superintendent Roberto Fajardo said police personnel were also deployed to bus terminals, LRT stations, malls and other public places.
Fajardo ordered the policemen to intensify patrols to protect people flocking to cemeteries to visit their dead.
There are eight cemeteries in Caloocan, eight in Malabon, three in Navotas and 11 in Valenzuela.
In Manila, Mayor Joseph Estrada made the rounds of major cemeteries in the city yesterday.
Around 170,000 people have visited their dead at the Manila North Cemetery since Sunday.
Police arrested five persons in the cemetery during an anti-crime operation.
They were Mark Kenneth Reyes, 23; Lazaro Francisco, 45; Paulino de la Vega, 32; Marlon Lange, 21, and Wilfredo Chavez, 50.
Personnel of the Department of Social Welfare and Development in its field offices in Quezon City and Pasay are on standby to assist people going to the cemeteries.
IACT: Brace for traffic jams
Meanwhile, the Inter-Agency Council on Traffic (IACT) advised motorists and commuters to brace for traffic gridlocks as travelers are expected to return to Metro Manila starting this afternoon after the long holiday break.
Nov. 2 is a regular working day.
Metropolitan Manila Development Authority officer-in-charge Tim Orbos said they are expecting heavy traffic starting this afternoon until tomorrow.
