More than three years after super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), more than 83 thousand affected families in Western Visayas have yet to received the government’s shelter aid.
In a report released by the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the P1.17-billion funding requested by DSWD Region 6 for the 83,228 typhoon-hit families was not approved by the Department of Budget and Management.
The report failed to explain why it was rejected.
In the previous Aquino administration, then DSWD secretary Corazon “Dinky” Soliman said the surplus for fiscal year 2015 can be allocated for those who have not yet received shelter assistance.
DSWD-6 regional director Rebecca Geamala earlier said that P8.8 billion has been released for shelter assistance of 503,840 families in Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Iloilo and Negros Occidental.
Families with totally damaged houses received P30,000 shelter aid while families with partially damaged houses received P10,000.
Earlier this month, Yolanda survivors in Panay island protested the politicization of the release of funds.
But DSWD-6 explained that it only released the Yolanda shelter aid to local government units that then distributed to its listed beneficiaries.
