President Rodrigo Duterte has assured the safe repatriation of suspected drug lord Kerwin Espinosa to the country after supposedly claiming he has “plenty to tell” to authorities.
“I guarantee you he will be brought back,” the president said in a press conference in Davao City, upon arrival from his trips to Malaysia and Thailand early Friday, November 11.
“It’s not easy to extract the guy. There are rules to be followed but he will be back to face the charges,” Duterte added.
Duterte said a team of the National Bureau of Investigation and the Philippine National Police would travel to Abu Dhabi and fetch Espinosa.
Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II earlier said three policemen will leave for Abu Dhabi on Sunday to bring Espinosa back to the country.
Espinosa, an alleged drug operator in Eastern Visayas, was arrested by Abu Dhabi police last month after months of hiding.
Espinosa, the justice secretary said, wanted to be placed under the witness protection program once he flies home, but he must first submit an affidavit before being qualified as a possible state witness.
Kerwin’s father, Albuera Mayor Rolando Espinosa, was killed inside his cell by policemen serving a search warrant last week. The incident is currently being investigated amid concerns Espinosa’s death was a police rubout.
