President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the cancellation of the country’s purchasing of 26,000 assault rifles from the United States.
He made the announcement in his speech after the signing of the executive order for the expanded Bangsamoro transition commission on Monday, November 7.
Reuters news agency first reported on November 1 that the U.S. State Department halted the planned sale of some 26,000 assault rifles for the Philippine National Police after Democrat Senator Ben Cardin expressed his opposition to the move, citing his concerns about the human rights violations in the country.
Days later, the PNP said while the purchase agreement with arms manufacturer SIG Sauer stays, it is also ready to procure new rifles from other countries, including China and Russia, following the U.S. decision.
