The national government has set aside P200 million to reopen the long abandoned municipal port in this town next year.
Leyte 3rd District Rep. Vicente Veloso said Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade has approved the allocation for the Villaba port in the General Appropriation Act (GAA) for next year.
The amount will be used for the construction of a roll-on, roll off facility and port services for shipping lines, Veloso said.
He said the port was opened 18 years ago by the late Leyte 3rd District Rep. Alberto Veloso but has since been abandoned by the government.
Once completed in 2018, the Villaba port is expected to boost the economy of Leyte. Since it is only 40 kilometers from Bogo, Cebu, it will cut travel time between Cebu and Leyte and save on fuel cost and expenses, the lawmaker said.
It would be an alternative port for passenger shipping lines that have stopped calling on the port in Tacloban City because they want to avoid passing through the treacherous San Juanico Strait, Veloso said.
