Hundreds
of indigenous people under the Sandugo alliance – most of them from the
same group involved in the violent rally staged in front of the United
States Embassy last Wednesday – gathered at Mendiola, Manila to call on
the administration to immediately disengage from its alliance with the
Western superpower.
“We welcome and commend the President’s
strong break up pronouncement with the United States. National
minorities have nothing to lose and much to gain if this pronouncement
turns into concrete action,” said Piya Macliing Palayao, Sandugo lead
conveyor.
Last
Thursday during his visit in China, Duterte declared the country’s
separation in terms of economic and military alliance from the US.
“In concrete terms, the Philippines’
separation from the economic and military grip of the U.S. must
translate to the immediate pull-out of US troops, especially those
stationed in ancestral lands and the abrogation of lopsided treaties
including the Enchanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) and the
Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA),” said Jerome Aba, of Suara Bangsamoro.
Meanwhile, the militants who then
marched from Welcome Rotonda in Quezon City to Mendiola also gave their
sentiments on the bloody dispersal at the U.S Embassy. “National
minorities have witnessed first-hand the brute force that the local
police can employ just to protect — not the Filipino people — but the
U.S,” Malayo said.
