Drug users who
surrendered in San Juan City will undergo spiritual counseling as part
of the multi-pronged approach adopted by the city government in its bid
to rid the city of illegal drugs.
Tapped by the city government to provide spiritual counseling to hundreds of the city’s drug users who turned themselves in to the authorities and are now undergoing rehabilitation is the Christ’s Commission Foundation.
This was revealed by San Juan City Vice Mayor Janella Ejercito-Estrada, head of the city anti-drug abuse council, who said they had a tie-up with a faith-based organization in the city tasked to provide moral and spiritual counseling to surrendered drug dependents and their families.
“The program (spiritual counseling) was formally launched along with the barangay-based rehabilitation,” Estrada, daughter of detained former Sen. Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada, said.
She revealed the counseling sessions were divided into four phases for them to be more effective in bringing back to the fold the drug addicts and pushers.
“Their (drug surrenderers) families are also included in the first round of the counseling so that they (drug surrenderers’ families) would also get to experience how hard it is being inside a rehabilitation facility,” the vice mayor added.
Records from the San Juan City government show that as of October 19, 663 drug suspects had surrendered, of which 542 of them were male.
Of the total number, 37 drug suspects were arrested, one person killed in an encounter with police operatives, and 13 drug suspects were killed by unidentified assailants or the so-called vigilantes.
The aim of Estrada along with the officials of the city government is to rid the city of illegal drugs before the year 2017 ends.
As part of the Duterte administration’s intensified anti-illegal drugs campaign, the city government recently conducted a mandatory drug tests for the city’s elected officials and appointed personnel.
“I want to make San Juan City drug-free by November next year, so, if we will clean the city from drug mess, we must also ensure that all elected officials are not hooked on illegal drugs,” the vice mayor added.
The young Estrada and Mayor Guia Gomez subjected themselves to a drug test to show that they are “serious in eradicating illegal drugs in the city.”
Gomez said as public servants they should set an example to their constituents since it is not good in the eyes of the public if only ordinary people are being subjected to a drug test.
“I am very thankful that we had this drug testing for all officials of the city hall and barangay. Let’s start with our own offices from the highest officials down to the ordinary citizens,” the mayor added.
Officials and employees found positive for use of illegal drugs will have to undergo rehabilitation for six months, but will be dismissed or suspended from their jobs if they refused to do so as stated in the city ordinance, Estrada said.
Gomez recalled at least 21 city hall employees were dismissed from their jobs after testing positive for drug use in the last four years.
