A migrant advocacy group urged government officials to closely monitor the security situation in Saudi Arabia after the reported failed attempt of a Yemeni rebel group to attack the Arab country.
“If it is necessary to issue a public advisory to warn our fellow OFWs in Jeddah and Makkah region, then the Philippine consulate should do so,” United Overseas Filipinos Worldwide (U-OFW) convener John Monterona said in a statement.
The Saudi-based migrant leader issued the appeal after the Saudi government intercepted and destroyed a missile fired by Yemen-based Houthi rebel group last week.
The Saudi authorities alleged the missile was aimed at the Holy Mosque in Makkah (Mecca), which is an important Islamic religious site. The rebel group denied, saying instead the missile was aimed at the King Abdul Aziz International Airport.
The incident has reignited the brewing political tension in the Middle East centered on the ongoing civil war in Saudi’s neighboring Yemen.
Monterona likewise urged OFWs in Saudi to remain calm and continue monitoring any advisory from the government.
