The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the
Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) are now implementing stricter security
checks for the coming Undas break.
PCG will be on heightened alert from October 27 to November 3, the peak days when travelers to provinces flock to terminals.
Commander Armand Balilo, PCG spokesman, said law enforcement teams, K9 units, sea marshals and other deployable teams are now on alert, with roughly 10,000 PCG personnel having cancelled their leaves to be on duty during the heightened alert period.
“They should be on top of the situation. Ibig sabihin (meaning) they should be monitoring, assisting ang ating personnel doon sa major ports (our personnel in the major ports),” Balilo said.
He added that a public assistance desk will be set up on different ports starting Wednesday, when they expect people to begin going home as the semestral break starts Monday.
“Naka-preposition na beginning Monday pa lang. Ang level ng alert niya Friday hanggang Sunday (They are already prepositioned starting Monday. They will be on alert starting Friday until Sunday),” he added.
Balilo also said that Rear Admiral William Melad, PCG commandant, had directed all PCG command districts to ensure no excess passengers and no maritime incident.
“All districts would be tasked to conduct safety, readiness and security operations,” he assured.
Port amenities
PPA general manager Jay Daniel Santiago also ensured providing convenience to passengers in 67 terminals nationwide.
Earlier this month, PPA began providing free Wi-Fi access to those ports.
Passenger terminal buildings have also been equipped with ventilation and air conditioning, clean restrooms, nursing stations and other travel amenities as well as round-the-clock medical and passenger assistance counters and passenger help desks.
Santiago also assured beefed-up security with walk-through and baggage X-ray machines, walk-through metal detectors, K9 units and constant visibility of PPA police and security guards within the port area.
“We can’t take for granted the security of our ports and the riding public. We should always be cautious and alert while making sure that passengers are comfortable while inside the terminals,” Santiago said.
Santiago, meanwhile, asked the public to segregate and declare metallic objects and bladed tools for industrial uses for tagging and safekeeping.
Vessel operators are also advised to actively provide information on changes in travel schedules and accommodation of affected passengers in succeeding trips.
