Some 200 inmates of the Manila City Jail staged a noise barrage and called for the ouster of the jail's warden, Thursday.
Inmates of Dorms 9 and 10, described as members of the Batang City Jail gang, climbed the roofs of their cells holding placards calling for the ouster of Jail Warden Superintendent Gerald Batag over a new policy that segregates drug suspects from other inmates.
According to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), the inmates were opposing the segregation or reclassification of drug offenders, which is part of BJMP's anti-illegal drugs advocacy programs.
"The purpose of the segregation is to give the inmates who were jailed of substance abuse with proper interventions such as therapy programs, physical fitness programs, counseling and spiritual enhancement activities," BJMP said in a statement.
Seven pointed objects were confiscated from the protesting inmates and one inmate needed medical treatment due to minor woulds from climbing the roof.
The BJMP said the prisoners had been pacified as elements from the BJMP and Manila Police District-Special Weapons and Tactics rushed to the scene.
