President Rodrigo Duterte will embark on a three-day visit to Japan on Tuesday, October 25, highlighted by meetings with Emperor Akihito, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and business leaders.
Tuesday, October 25
The president’s first activity on Tuesday is a meeting with hundreds of members of the Filipino community at the Palace Hotel Tokyo. There are now more than 400,000 Filipinos working and living in Japan.
Wednesday, October 26
Duterte’s busiest day is Wednesday, when all major meetings with government and business leaders have been lined up.
The president is expected to meet with officers of the Japan-Philippines Parliamentarians Friendship League at the Prince Tower Tokyo, followed by the signing ceremony of the potential investments. He is also expected to make a pitch for investments before Japanese businessmen afterwards.
In the afternoon, Duterte will hold a closed-door meeting with Prime Minister Abe to discuss bilateral and regional issues as well as strengthen the strategic partnership.
“A bold scope of bilateral discussions between the president and Japanese leaders will include security, economic and defense cooperation, infrastructure development and development projects in Mindanao, among others,” Presidential Communications Assistant Secretary Marie Banaag said.
After the signing of agreements, the two leaders are expected to issue a joint statement and later hold a tête-à-tête. Abe will also host a dinner for the President and his party at the prime minister’s official residence.
Thursday, October 27
On Thursday, top executives of Japanese firms will pay a courtesy call on the president. Among these officials represent the Japan International Cooperation Agency, Japan External Trade Organization, Marubeni Corporation and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation.
Before flying back to the country, the president is also expected to pay a state call on His Majesty the Emperor at the Imperial Palace.
