Two new cases of Zika virus have been confirmed by the Department of Health (DOH) on Thursday, bringing the number of cases in the country to 19.
Speaking at the sidelines of the first National Summit on Zika Virus, DOH Undersecretary Gerardo Bayugo disclosed that they were able to record two more Zika cases, both of which came from Cavite.
“The last two cases that were confirmed came from Region 4-A (Calabarzon). The best I can say is we have two new cases, both identified coming from Cavite,” said Bayugo.
The new cases, he noted, involves one child and an elderly.
“They have been discharged from the hospital,” said Bayugo.
With the number of Zika cases in the country continuously rising, the DOH said it is already reinforcing their capabilities to prevent as well as detect suspected patients.
This, according to Bayugo, includes the procurement of Zika pregnancy package and purchase of additional real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test kits.
“A total of P16.5 million is provided by the DOH for the procurement of Real-time PCR test to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine and other sub-national laboratories,” said the health official.
He said that another P40 million has been allotted for the ongoing procurement of Zika pregnancy package, which will be distributed to identified Zika hotspot areas.
“This package will include three bottles of insect repellent, one single treated bed net, and two brochures which will contain information on Zika,” said Bayugo.
