Bulusan Volcano spewed ash anew Monday.
Crispulo Diolate, Bulusan’s resident volcanologist, said white steam plumes that rose up to 1,000 meters occurred at 7:36 a.m. The eruption lasted for 24 minutes.
Bulusan’s seismic monitoring network also recorded 24 volcanic quakes in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.
Phivolcs said alert level 1 remains in effect, which indicates that hydrothermal processes are underway beneath the volcano that may lead to more steam-driven eruptions.
Phivolcs reminded the public and concerned local government units that entry into the four-kilometer permanent danger zone is prohibited due to sudden and steam-driven eruptions.
The agency warned residents near rivers and streams around the volcano against sediment-laden and lahar flows during heavy rainfall.
Pilots were advised to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ash from any sudden phreatic eruption could be hazardous to aircraft.
The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) issued a notice to airmen (Notam) at 9 a.m. yesterday in connection with the volcano’s eruption.
CAAP said the Notam is effective until 9 a.m. today. The notice may be extended depending on the activity of the volcano.
Phivolcs said it is still verifying the amount of ash spewed and the number of affected barangays.
