As soon as the sun rises, vendors started invading Roxas Avenue to set up stalls, tables, chairs and makeshift kitchens again, followed by the aroma of street foods, a sign that the night market is already open for business.
The night market occupies at least three blocks of Roxas Avenue where people can dine, shop and get a massage. It is the center of the nightlife in Davao City where students, lovers, families and employees meet up during their break time.
On the evening of Sept. 2, a powerful blast ripped through the night market killing 14 people and wounding at least 70 others.
It shook Davao City, along wit its image of safety and peace challenged. The people of Davao remained strong.
Three days after the attack, vendors slowly returned to their stalls. On the commemoration of the first week of the bombing, the Roxas night market is again filled with life.
Now, there stands a memorial in the middle where people can offer flowers and candles for the victims. Though there is still an eerie feeling at the blast site, the crowds still flock the night market with Davaoeños still mourning, but not afraid.
